Alsace, an engaging combination of Germanic reliability
with French "Joie de Vivre
Located in eastern France, Alsace is the smallest French region (40 miles long by 16 miles wide) but one of the most significant cultural landscapes in Europe. The Celts, the Romans, the Allemannians and the Franks have left their marks for hundreds past centuries all along the Upper Rhine left bank. Influenced by both French and German culture, Alsace has its own language and own mentality.
Half-timbered houses adorned with flowers, gabled roofs and chimneys topped with stork nests. In a so small territory, you will discover majestic forests of the Vosges, peaceful lakes and rivers, lovely "Renaissance" towns like Colmar, medieval fortresses like Riquewihr and Kaysersberg on the Route des Vins... Alsace is also a paradise for golfers with 11 golf courses designed all along the territory.
Region of good living, Alsace cannot be visited without stopping by a traditional "Winstub" (pronounce "vinestoub"), a typical Alsatian-style brasserie, the rightplace for wine tastings while enjoying some regional dishes. Alsace cuisine is rich and copious but also really unique. The most famous specialty is Chouchroute, sauerkraut garnished with potatoes and a variety of meats such as sausage, pork or ham. The Baeckaoffe is a one-of-a-kind Alsatian fare baked with white wine usually in a traditional pottery dish only made in the village of Soufflenheim. It's a stew comprised of pork, beef and lamb garnished with potatoes. Cakes and desserts play a major part on holidays and at family gatherings especially

the Kougelhopf, a brioche pastry with butter, eggs, raisins, whole almonds marinated in kirsch. At Christmas, bredles and gingerbreads decorate the tables of all Alsatian families. Bredles are cookies of different shapes flavoured with anise, cinnamon or almond. Delicious and surprising !
Discovering Alsace with Lifestyle Vacations is a unique experience, with the guarantee to meet the right people, to visit the right places (not only the most touristic ones). Whatever your itinerary, you are welcome as a guest, not a tourist, and the places where you stay are simply your home.
