LYON AND ITS REGION AT A GLANCE
There’s many reasons to choose Lyon as your upcoming holiday destination. If the second French city is the number-one gourmet spot with numerous Michelin-starred restaurants and great “bouchon” bistrots, Lyon is also a beautiful city, built at the confluence of the graceful Rhône and Saône rivers, with an outstanding old district ‘Vieux Lyon’ dating back to the Roman ages and to the Renaissance which contributed to list the city at the Unesco world heritage. Besides its unique cultural attraction, Lyon remains a lively city with its thriving arts scene, numerous restaurants and bars, open-air markets, antiques, fashion designers boutiques, boardering the narrow cobbled streets that should be. Thanks to a blessed location, about two hour distance to Paris, Marseille or the Alps and its world’s 2 largest ski areas and resorts by train or by car, the capital of the French Gastronomy is nearby the Beaujolais vineyards and to Les Pierres Dorées ‘Golden Stones’ region adorned with picturesque villages, where potters, painters and sculptors find their inspiration, and where local producers have found the perfect natural environment to make their cheese, honey and other great specialties. > More information about the Beaujolais, and the Golden Stones region > More information about Lyon, capital of the Gauls
ABOUT THE LYON'S CUISINE
Described by many as the gastronomic capital of the world, Lyon's cuisine owes its virtuosity to the quality of local produce. The farms of the Bresse and Charolais regions, the wild game of the Dombes, the fish from the Savoy lakes, the fruits and vegetables of the Rhone Valley and the Forez region are all within easy reach and supply the essential ingredients for Lyon's famed cuisine. Regional specialities include : cervelle de canuts (soft cheese with herbs), petit salé (ham with lentils), quenelles (puréed fish, veal or chicken mixed with whipped white eggs and cream, before being poached and then cooked with some cheese). The best place to taste these typical recipes is to experience a lunch or a dinner at a typical « bouchon » bistrot.
